Ce photographe anonyme a laissé plus de cinq mille clichés des années folles. Autour d’une passion: les femmes et leur sexe. Les Origines du monde selon Monsieur X.
En 1976, un octogénaire pousse la porte d’une librairie spécialisée dans le livre ancien et les curiosa: en vitrine, il a vu des photos anciennes un peu corsées. Le vieux monsieur possède une série de clichés osés et, semaine après semaine, Monsieur X (le libraire l’a baptisé ainsi puisqu’il n’ a jamais pu l’identifier) apporte des caisses de photos, la plupart en 18×24, d’autres en 6×13, certaines en stéréoscopie. Dans le petit cénacle de la photo érotique, c’est une révolution: personne ne connaissait ces photos, vite identifiables grâce aux obsessions précises de Monsieur X. Les éro-collectionneurs savent le jour où passe Monsieur X, ils se précipitent le lendemain pour racheter ses clichés au libraire. Depuis, Monsieur X est devenu une valeur identifiée de la photo érotique ancienne.
Il y a quatre, cinq ans, probablement après sa mort, un autre libraire a récupéré près de 5 000 contacts, qu’Alexandre Dupouy, de la galerie Les Larmes d’Eros, a identifiés comme ceux de Monsieur X. Celui-ci y apparaît, plutôt bel homme, aux côtés d’une fille nue dans une glace. Un autre homme est présent, un ami qui a tout du tenancier de bordel. Derrière les planches contact, quarante-neuf prénoms, à réciter comme un poème surréaliste: «Andrée, Angèle, Babette, Cécile, Charlotte, Christiane, Colette, Denise, Didich, Etiennette, Fanfan, Gaby»… jusqu’à «Yasmina, Yvonne et Zita». Sur ses tirages, Monsieur X a gratté le numéro de plaque minéralogique de sa voiture. Dupouy l’a retrouvé sur ses contacts, il aurait pu ainsi l’identifier mais il a préfèré respecter l’anonymat du bonhomme.
Sa galerie présente aujourd’hui près de trois cents clichés de Monsieur X, ainsi qu’une monographie. «Il tirait lui-même ses photos mais c’était un médiocre laborantin». L’obsession de Monsieur X, c’est le tableau de Courbet, l’Origine du monde. Monsieur X est fou du sexe de la femme, et des femmes qui, pour lui plaire, exhibent leur sexe devant son objectif (même si elles gardent leur chapeau cloche). Sa posture préférée: une ou deux femmes en exhibant une autre…
Ses modèles, à l’évidence, étaient pensionnaires dans une maison close. Sont-elles si heureuses ou est-ce le sourire de l’esclave dansant dans son champ de coton? Sur les photos, elles rigolent; c’est charmant, littéralement. A l’occasion, un regard se fait plus triste, comme une fissure dans ce bonheur louche. Parfois Monsieur X et son ami le tenancier présumé les emmènent à la campagne, ça vous prend des allures de Maison Tellier. Et en avant, jarretières en bataille dans la nature.
Monsieur X est aussi un amoureux de la photographie, à l’ère Brassai. Monsieur X soigne ses cadrages et laisse quelques nus académiques. Telle femme, les yeux fermés, un sein dévoilé, la camisole relevée sur son Origine du monde, le bas roulé juste en dessous du genou, s’inscrit d’emblée dans le plus bel imaginaire surréaliste. Une belle photo, c’est aussi la qualité, l’intensité de la relation entre le photographe et ses modèles. Les prostituées ont trop souvent été victimes d’artistes qui les tiraient comme au safari. L’obsédé Monsieur X reste un photographe de la proximité, un proche.

Alexander D. Grinberg (1885-1979) is one of the most respected Russian photographers of the twentieth century. Born at the end of the nineteenth century, and having lived ninety-four years, he experienced the Russian revolutionary, the Civil War, two world wars, stalinist repression along with numerous fluctuations in soviet political and cultural history. Even as a child Grinberg demonstrated a strong attraction to photography, taking his first photography at the age of ten.
By the age of twenty-two he was an active member of the Russian photographic society, where he became a leading creative force. In 1908 he was awarded the silver medal in the all-Russian photo exhibition in Moscow and the gold medal in the international photo-exhibition in dresden, which signaled the recognition of his talents on an international level.
In 1914 Grinberg was invited to work at the Khanzhankov film studio in Moscow. Becoming the head of the film advertising sections, he quickly established process for mass distribution and here he began his cinematographic career. He went on to work behind the camera for numerous studios. In the 1920’a his cinematographic experience led him to become an instructor at the state technical institute of cinematography where he began his association with Sergey Eisenstein who he photographed. His prestige was on the rise throughout the 1920s until 1929 when, under the storm of the cultural revolution the « old school » of Soviet photography came under fire as « depraved », and Grinberg fell out of favor.
The new cultural policy dictated that any eroticism in artistic forms was a remnant of bourgeois idleness, and inappropriate for soviet society. Nevertheless, Grinberg risked one more exhibition of his work in 1935 with images of partially dressed women, raising a storm of criticism, as well as prompting a few brave photographers to come to the defense of this artistic master. Consequently, for his unorthodox vision of photography he was arrested and sentenced to a labor camp for distribution of pornography. By 1939 he was released on early parole, for good behavior and industriousness, although by the time of his release he had permanently lost his sense of smell. He resumed to work as a photographer for a variety of institutions such as museums and taught photography.
His early work was not destroyed as would have normally happened because his older brother managed to hide the negatives for many years. During the second world war he worked to preserve and restore rare photo archives. After the war he worked in the house of models, photographing for fashion designers. In the 1950s he photographed various Soviet film starts and scientists.
His whole life was thus devoted to photography, which he never abandoned in the most difficult of circumstances.
